A Seasonal Guide to Protea Flowers

Ever wondered why your space feels brighter, more alive with a vase of protea flowers? It’s not just the vibrant colors or the exotic shapes; it’s the journey these flowers take through the seasons, right to your table. At our farm, nestled along California’s coastline, we live by nature’s clock, growing Protea, Banksia, Waratah, and Pincushion flowers that tell a story of resilience and beauty.

What to Expect Each Season

From the crisp days of fall stretching into the vibrant hues of spring, our farm is a riot of colors. King Protea, Queen Protea, and Pink Ice, they don’t just grow; they reign during these cooler months, with Banksia adding its own flair to the mix. It’s a spectacle, one that we’re proud to share far and wide.

Then comes spring and summer, times of transition and warmth, where Waratah and Pincushion step into the sunlight. And let’s not forget the Duchess Protea, a summer-loving bloom that reminds us of the endless cycle of growth and renewal.

A Little Love Goes a Long Way

Received a bouquet? Here’s the skinny on keeping those blooms fresh and fabulous:

  • First things first. Give the stems a trim and a place them in fresh water. Adding our included flower food means the plants get the carbs they need.

  • Keep it cool. Though they grow in the sun, these beauties are hot fans of the heat once cut. Room temperature is just fine, but if you can swing between 50-60 degrees, they will last even longer.

  • Shade is a must. Flowers love sun right? Not once they’re cut. Direct sunlight on cut Protea will shorten their lifespan significantly.

  • Change the water. Every few days is amazing, and weekly works also. Keep the water fresh so your Protea stay fresh.

  • No more flower food? A half teaspoon of sugar does the trick. Protea need carbs as an energy source once they open or they’ll pull it from their leaves and stems which results in browning.

Why Seasonal Flowers Matter

Almost any flower can be bought at any time of the year. That means greenhouses and long flights across the world to get to you. Naturally seasonal blooms like our Proteas, Banksias and Pincushion mean a more sustainable approach to buying flowers. It’s just like eating in-season food to follow nature’s rhythm

Flowers that grow under sun and rain come to you at their freshest, with more vivid colors, and longer lasting vase life. This is the essence of what makes a seasonal bouquet stand out. You're part of a larger story, one that values the earth and the unique beauty each season brings.

We look forward to bringing a piece of our world into your homes, season by season.
